The Bloedel Works:
I created these plein-air paintings in May 2018, while I was a Creative Resident at Bloedel Reserve, on Bainbridge Island. All of the works are Oil on Arches Paper, and were developed on-sight in the gardens. These works are an integral part of my current, ongoing body of work. I consider them my "primary documents" and they help inform the development of my larger, conceptual studio paintings.
During my time at Bloedel Reserve, the idea of the Garden became a meaningful metaphor for Painting: the conscious cultivation of color and form within a specific boundary. This process of cultivation must not only allow for, but celebrate, change.
With this body of work I am investigating my perception through the tactile experience of painting in nature. I seek to realize my sensations through the formal choreography of painting.
